潘天寿（1897—1971），字大颐，号寿者，浙江宁海县人，现代著名画家、美术教育家。早年名天授、阿寿、雷婆头峰寿者等。善画花鸟、山水，兼善指画，亦能书法、诗词、篆刻。潘天寿对传统山水、花鸟、人物等绘画方向和美术史理论等方面精通，并且还坚持创新，不拘泥于传统，主张"常中求变以悟常,变中求常以悟变"。

潘天寿“常中求变以悟常，变中求常以悟变”。在其绘画作品中，指墨画的作品数量占据大半，这便是潘天寿“变”的内容。用手指蘸墨，作大幅画时，食指、中指、无名指、小指四指并下，其效果和气势愈发磅礴有力、恢弘壮阔。
